Dr. Kendell R. Sprott

Dr. Kendell R. Sprott is the chief executive officer of the Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a special hospital and educational facility for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities.

Prior to joining Matheny, Dr. Sprott served as the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, the Acting Chair of Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Rutgers- New Jersey Medical School. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was Vice-Chair and Director of Community Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of NJ at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from August 1998 to July 2005.

Dr. Sprott serves on the Boards of the Association for Children of New Jersey, Alliance for the Betterment of Citizens with Disabilities, Rutgers Community Health Foundation and the Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition and LifeCamp.  He has served on the Boards of Children’s Future, the New Jersey Public Policy Research Institute, the National Association of Counsel for Children and the Plainfield School Based Youth Services Program. He has been on the Governor’s Council on Children’s Services Planning, the Advisory Panel of the Black Infant Mortality Reduction Resource Center, and the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the American Heart Association. He played an active role in establishing NJ Safe Kids and Co-Chaired Child Health Month. He served as the Pediatrician for the WIC Advisory Council for a number of years.  He was appointed to the Governor’s Council on Autism Research and Treatment from 2005 – 2011 and chaired the Council from 2005 – 2008. After completing his residency in Pediatrics at NJMS in Newark, his practice has been primarily in Newark as an Intensivist, In Patient specialist and Generalist. He has written a weekly column on Children’s health issues in the Starledger for over 13 years.  

Dr. Sprott holds Doctor of Medicine degree from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School, a Doctor of Jurisprudence law degree from Rutgers Law School and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Morehouse College. Dr. Sprott and his wife, Donna, a retired Obstetrician/Gynecologist, reside in Plainfield.
