Anthony Culpepper, Jr.

Longtime Mentor, Community Leader, Student Advocate and Educator

For over thirty years Anthony C. Culpepper Jr. has served as a Mentor, Community Leader, Student Advocate, Educator and known affectionately as “Uncle Tony”.Anthony was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey where he was educated in the public school system from kindergarten to high school. He hails as a graduate of Central High School – “Blue Devil” ranking seventh in his class. This success is attributed to his participation in the Stevens Technical Enrichment Program (STEP)

Upward Bound Project at Stevens Institute of Technology of which Anthony is a proud TRiO Alumni.Anthony has been married to his loving wife Stephanie Coleman-Culpepper for over 25 years and prides himself on being surrounded by his lovely sister Dr. Deneen Washington, two nieces Shanice, Shakira and fourteen loving Godchildren, family and friends.

Upon graduating from high school, Anthony began a new journey in his life by entering Rutgers University with the intention of being a civil engineer. During his time at Rutgers, he was a very active student. Anthony was a Co-Founder of the Minority Engineering Education Task, member of the Paul Robeson Club, Co-Founder of the Black and Latino Orientation with David A. Perkins “RC 81” and Dean Fred Clark, and an active member of the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.a fall 1980 initiate. After many years of studying and working his way through college, in 1985 he graduated from Livingston College with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Africana Studies and minor in mathematics.

Anthony is a student development professional with many years of experience working Within three different higher educational institutions where he has enhanced the quality of life for students. He was employed by Rutgers University prior to graduation initiating his career in computer operation while working part-time at the Paul Robeson Cultural Center. In this role, he developed and implemented cultural workshops and programs like, Black and Latino Orientation Program and the EOF Summer Olympics Games. Anthony was known as an ambassador of innovation, creativity, and energizer, while expanding the outreach and impact of students, as they began expanding their borders through educational collaborations, partnerships and outreach.

As a community leader Anthony has been active in many professional organizations on the local,regional and national levels. He has served as a founding member of Rutgers African-AmericanAlumni Alliance and was a member of the Board of Directors. He was RAAA representative to the Rutgers Alumni Fraternity and Sorority Council and the President for the Rutgers African-AmericanAlumni Alliance from 1994-1996. Anthony also served as the president for the Association for Equality and Excellence in Education, Inc., and Board Member for Council for the Opportunity in Education for National TRiO programs from 2008 to 2011. In 2007 he was awarded the United States SenateCertificate of Special Recognition for his work within the TRiO Community. He currently serves as aBoard Member for Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Community Advisory Board. Anthony is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where he has held offices on the undergraduate, Alumni and Regional level. He is also an active member and Deacon at the Cathedral International of Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

Anthony is currently employed by New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Office of Dean ofStudents as the Assistant to the Dean for Parent and Veteran Services. He also serves as the advisor for the newly created Veteran Students Organization that works to develop support services and policy that assist the Veteran and military students in having a successful social and academic career at NJIT.
