RAAA presented a check to Dr. Ilene Rosen in the amount of $5,700.00 in support of the RAAA Nasir R. Shakir Memorial Endowed Scholarship.

In December 2020, RAAA set its sight on creating a scholarship to honor the Late Nasir Shakir (ENG ’98) who passed away unexpectedly in November 2020. After a very successful debut during the 2021 Rutgers Giving day, RAAA worked with Dean Rosen’s office, RAAA Life member Ukachi Anonyuo, the Rutgers University Foundation along with family members of Nasir to formally create an endowed scholarship to honor, in perpetuity, his rich legacy of generosity and paying it forward.

With RU Giving Day 2022 just around the corner, RAAA’s initial goal of $50,000 is clearly in sight!   It is their ultimate goal to establish a $100,000+ endowed scholarship to match Nasir’s generosity to provide for  2+ annual scholarships to NSBE/MEET students.

The RAAA Nasir R. Shakir Memorial Endowed Scholarship was created in remembrance and reflection of Nasir’s generous spirit. He mentored many of the young men and women he encountered. He also supported and sponsored college students through the National Society of Black Engineers as a means to pay forward the guidance and support his mentor, Rutgers University Dean Donald Brown gave to him. As he was an Engineering and EOF student as well as very active in the MEET/NSBE organization at Rutgers, the scholarship is directed towards undergraduate students in these spaces.
