Dr. Leon Green

Rutgers Student Activist, Psychologist and Veteran Affairs Advocate

Dr. Leon Green is the Associate Chief of Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences for Psychology at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration, New Jersey Health Care System.  Dr. Green is a licensed clinical psychologist. As the Associate Chief, he is responsible for providing direction, oversight and professional supervision for psychologists. Dr. Green chairs the Psychology Professional Standards Board for psychologists. Dr. Green is the Coordinator for the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Compensation and Pension Examination Program. During 29 years at the VA, Dr. Green held previous positions as the Acting Chief of Psychology Service, Assistant Chief of Psychology Service, Chief of the Drug Dependency Treatment Program and Coordinator of the Psychological Consultation Pain Clinic, the Stress Management Clinic, the Weight Reduction Clinic and the Sexual Dysfunction Clinic.

Dr. Green’s professional activities include being a member of the VA National Psychology Professional Standards Training Board and Associate Editor of American Psychological Association Division 18 journal, Psychological Services. Dr. Leon Green is currently the Staff Liaison/ Co-Chair of Veteran Advisory Council and served as a member of the Mental Health Executive Board of the Veterans Integrated Service Network 3. Dr. Green’s team developed the Mental Health Treatment Planner (currently called “Mental Health Suite”) with Document Storage Systems which is currently being deployed nationwide in the VA.

Dr. Green has served on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey Public Policy Research Institute of New Jersey and New Jersey Black Issues Convention. He has served on editorial boards of several professional psychology journals. Dr. Green has published and presented over 35 professional journal articles, book chapters, reviews and paper presentations.

Dr. Green began his career at Rutgers College in 1967, served as president for Students for an Afro-American Society, and received a B.A. with Distinction in Psychology in 1971 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University in 1976.   From 1975 to 1983, Dr. Green was an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology of Rutgers University. He served as a psychological consultant (1977-1978) and as Head Counselor/Instructor (1969-1973) for the Academic Foundation Department of Rutgers College. From 1974 to 1975, Dr. Leon Green was a Lecture and Psychology Coordinator for the Special Health Careers Opportunity Grant at Livingston College.

Dr. Green is a member of the American Psychological Association, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and the Association of VA Psychology Leaders. Dr. Green received a Minority Faculty Development Award for 1980 – 1981from Rutgers – The State University. In 1988, he received a Special Merit Award for Professional Employee Outstanding Achievement from the Federal Executive Board of Metropolitan Northern New Jersey. Dr. Green was honored with Commendation from the Veterans Integrated Service Network 3 of the VA for his services on the Mental Health Advisory Group.
